Muara Laboh - Geothermal Field Exploration Driving Expansion with NANT

The Great Sumatra Fault in West Sumatra, Indonesia, is a dynamic region where tectonic and magmatic processes converge. This unique setting fosters the upwelling of magmatic fluids, forming geothermal subsurface systems marked by hot springs and fumarolic activity near the Kerinci volcano. To explore the geothermal potential of this region, a high-resolution Nodal Ambient Noise Tomography (NANT) survey was conducted.

Project Overview

  • Client: Supreme Energy

  • Survey Type: NANT

  • Deployment: 212 three-component seismic nodes

  • Survey Region: 400 km² in Muara Laboh, West Sumatra, Indonesia

  • Duration: March – September 2024

  • Geological Environment: Volcanic, Geothermal

The survey focused on identifying subsurface reservoirs, fluid transfer pathways, and zones of enhanced permeability to support sustainable geothermal energy development.

Innovation and Impact

The Nodal Ambient Noise Tomography (NANT) conducted by INVERT played a pivotal role in the expansion of Muara Laboh geothermal field. By delivering detailed high-resolution 3D S-wave velocity models, the survey identified key geothermal reservoirs and high-permeability zones, reducing exploration risks and enabling informed planning for the 80MW Unit 2 project. These insights supported Supreme Energy in securing $92.6 million in financing from the Asian Development Bank, facilitating the project’s expansion and constributing to Indonesia’s clean energy goals.
